The kind of editing or proofreading that your manuscript requires will be determined by what stage you are at in writing it.

General/structural editing

General/structural editing occurs at the point when your manuscript is still at draft stage. It may still need some rewriting or restructuring before further work and/or publication.

This service includes (but is not necessarily limited to) the following:

• • • • • • • assessing and shaping your material to ensure that you have presented it logically, clearly and systematically
            • checking the clarity of your expression
            • checking the presentation of your material (both text and images)
            • checking the layout and formatting of your manuscript
            • checking non-text components of your manuscript (e.g. tables, illustrations, charts) as well as text
            • ensuring that your referencing is consistent and correct
            • fact checking
            • advising where rewriting is required (and how to go about it).

Copyediting

Copyediting occurs once the structure and content of your manuscript are finalised.

This service includes (but is not necessarily limited to) the following:

• • • • • • • checking grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax
            • ensuring consistency in formatting (headings, subheadings), layout, numbering, capitalisation
            • checking that you have cited and quoted your material correctly, consistently and appropriately.

proofreading

Proofreading occurs after all structural editing and copyediting on your manuscript has been completed and your manuscript has been typeset or otherwise formally laid out in preparation for publication.

This service includes (but is not necessarily limited to) the following:

• • • • • • • eliminating typographical errors (including line breaks, cross references, font size)
            • checking the front matter (contents page, preface, forward, copyright page)
            • checking the end matter (appendices, indices)
            • checking footnotes, endnotes, illustration captions.
