Books
I’m the author of three works of fiction – a novella and two novels for young adults.
My novella, Ravenous Girls, won the inaugural 20/40 Publishing Prize in 2023. It’s published by Finlay Lloyd Publications and is available for sale in many independent bookshops across Australia and here. It was named Fiction Pick of the Week in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers and over at the Guardian Australia, it was named one of the 25 Best Australian Books of 2023.
Burton has written a vivid, intimate sketch of 1980s adolescence – and a clear-eyed reflection on the traumatic experience of loving someone with a severe eating disorder. Fuelled by emotion recollected in tranquillity, it’s a coming-of-age story of remarkable compression, compassion and nuance.
— Cameron Woodhead, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age
Chroniclers of fictional family life don’t always understand that trauma is most often multilayered, like scar tissue. Just how fully author Rebecca Burton grasps this is evident in her delicate characterisations and sometimes heartbreaking plot.
— Paul Daley, Guardian Australia
… crafty and poignant, showing the richness of adolescence, the pain of growing up and growing wise, how complicated feelings can be crystallised in a moment. Ravenous Girls feels just the right length, short but resonant. I keep thinking about it.
My first novel for young adults, Leaving Jetty Road, was published by HarperCollins Australia and was also published overseas. It was named as a Notable Book by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and it won a Varuna Award for Manuscript Development.
My second novel for young adults, Beyond Evie , was published by HarperCollins Australia, and was translated into German and published by Oetinger Taschenbuch under the title Beautiful World. It was named as a Notable Book by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
